Blade-Made shows innovative repurpose solutions
Blade–Made is demonstrating how circularity can be put into practice by repurposing decommissioned wind turbine blades and nacelle components into durable new products and infrastructure applications. Rather than treating composite materials as waste, Blade–Made focuses on extending their useful life through innovative repurposing solutions. Products such as the Blade Barrier® and Nacelle Micro Home give turbine components a completely new function, preserving the value embedded in the material for decades to come. These applications can significantly extend the lifetime of composite materials beyond their original use in wind turbines. This approach aligns closely with the principles of the circular economy, where keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible is preferred over recycling or energy recovery. By slowing resource loops and creating practical second-life applications, Blade–Made contributes to reducing waste while unlocking new economic and environmental value from existing wind turbine assets. Sif presents the circular strategy ‘Dematerialisation’
The Circular Wind Guide is an exciting non-profit initiative of ECHT and the University of Leeds with the specific aim to inspire and guide towards circular practices in the wind industry. We are happy to launch the next circular strategy with Sif Netherlands B.V. on ‘Dematerialisation’. Dematerialisation fits within circular economy strategies focused on minimising resource use. Sif’s Skybox is an innovative main access platform for TP-less monopiles in offshore wind farms – and a great example for dematerialising. Through Transition Piece-less (TP-less) monopile design, the wind turbine tower gets integrated directly onto the monopile, eliminating the need for a transition piece. Sif estimates 5 to 10% steel reduction when going for a TP-less Monopile. This could result in 200 metric tonne steel reduction per foundation. LM Wind Power present the circular strategy ‘Waste prevention’
The Circular Wind Guide is an exciting non-profit initiative of ECHT and the University of Leeds with the specific aim to inspire and guide towards circular practices in the wind industry. We are happy to launch the next circular strategy with LM Wind Power on ‘Waste prevention’. Waste prevention is about eliminating waste from production rather than having to deal with waste once it has emerged. This reduces costs and the environmental and social impacts from waste management. LM Wind Power’s Zero Waste Blades program has been established aiming at reducing direct consumption of materials, which are used in the blade building process. An example is the development of an algoritm enabling supply of glass rolls at optimal roll length for each blade design instead of standard length bringing down glass reinforcement waste by 12% providing both enviromental and economic benefits. Launching partner: Vattenfall present the circular strategy ‘Repurpose’
The Circular Wind Guide is an exciting non-profit initiative of ECHT and the University of Leeds with the specific aim to inspire and guide towards circular practices in the wind industry. We are honored with Vattenfall as the launching partner of the Guide, presenting the first circular strategy on ‘Repurpose ’. Repurposing refers to the structural reuse of wind turbine components for a different function than its original use. The showcase that Vattenfall provided on this circular strategy concerns a groundbreaking project in Lund, Sweden. Here decommissioned wind turbine blades are repurposed as part of an eco-friendly parking structure. More information is found here. Circular Wind Guide presented during DDW
The Dutch Design week is the annual event showcasing design and innovative solutions of all facets of life. Nina Vielen-Kallio , lead Circularity at ECHT regie in transitie was presenting the Circular Wind Guide as part of an event of Vattenfall on Thursday October 24th . Vattenfall joined forces with the What If Lab in 2023[NV5] , to develop scenarios with design studios around the question “What if… decommissioning a wind farm becomes a gold mine of resources?” During Dutch Design Week (DDW), Vattenfall showcased a nacelle converted into a tiny house to new initiatives for reusing and recycling wind turbine materials, come see how imagination and technology can create a sustainable future.
